What we did

The journey in detail

Our tried and tested process

We listened to our client

Discovery and briefing phase

We met with stakeholders ie the managers of the student services area of MGSM.

We talked about:

  • the challenges and pain points of the current website
  • the content updating processes
  • common questions to the front line staff
  • surveying the students
  • building a wish-list for the new website
  • how a new website would help improve their situation.

How we solved the problem

  • To find out what they were trying to achieve with the tool, we reviewed the stats and talked to the students who use the tool.
  • The then featured the three main features that were important to students, and demoted any features that were not core to the goals of the students.
  • Once designed, we tested the wireframe version of the proposed new tool to confirm that the new tool was intuitive for the students.
  • Once that testing process was complete, we built the tool in the content management system named Squiz Matrix CMS.

More specifically we went through the following process:

  • Project planning
  • Website statistics review
  • Web content audit
  • Web content refresh
  • User research and testing
  • Building the online tool in Squiz Matrix CMS
  • Quality assurance
  • Communications and approvals process
  • We tested the new online tool from a technical point of view using checklists and testing tools
  • Post launch client follow up
  • Training of website editors
planning the project
We created a plan to solve
the challenge for our client.

What we delivered

  • When looking at independent statistics (Google Analytics), we saw a marked improvement in all the key metrics:
    • a 122% increase in usage of the tool
    • 15% increase in
    • 78% decrease in bounce rate
  • When comparing heatmaps from the old interface with the new interface, it showed a 400% increase in usage of the features.
  • The unit directory can now be updated by anyone in the organisation that has had training on editing webpages.

Stats and facts

Online tool for student class database
  • Page views 35% increase
  • Time on site 45% increase
  • Bounce rate 83% decrease

Goals

  • To make the tool more user-friendly for the MGSM student
  • To make the process of updating the unit directory more streamlined and more sustainable.

Challenge

An online tool that students used regularly, was built inside a legacy database that was outdated, unsupported, and could only be updated by 1 person via a spreadsheet. Student found the tool confusing to use and only took advantage of the most basic features of the tool.

After the success of the website re-build project, I re-engaged Polished Pixels in 2016 to rebuild an online tool / database. Polished Pixels again delivered an excellent result. David McGrath, Manager Academic Programs at Macquarie Graduate School of Management
